Modern Calligraphy vs. Brush Lettering

Last week, I posted this on Instagram because someone had asked why we used an oblique calligraphy pen, nib and ink vs just markers, especially for a beginner calligraphy kit.
The key difference is that our Calligraphy Starter Kits teach Modern Calligraphy, not brush lettering.
We do have Brush Lettering Kits too, just like this one, but the resulting lettering is different. I love both, but definitely modern calligraphy has a special spot in my heart ;) Brush pens are just so convenient, but there's something truly magical about picking up a calligraphy pen, dipping it into ink and hearing the nib on the paper. Haha, calligraphy nerd here.

Modern vs. Brush
Modern Calligraphy uses the traditional tools of pointed-pen calligraphy, it has the base of traditional calligraphy styles as well, but it's called modern because you can infuse your own style to it, like bouncing the letters or creating unique flourishes vs writing in a specific style. Brush Lettering is also a "modern" style because it uses a more modern tool, which are flexible brush tip pens, and you can also write in your own style with them.
Which One is Easier?
It depends. I think it's easier to learn Brush Lettering than Modern Calligraphy. But, personally, I find modern calligraphy easier to write with, because the nib can only go a certain direction and I love that I can control where it needs to go. For me, it's like having a professional camera vs. my iPhone camera. My iPhone camera has improved a lot in the past years, but it can't replicate what a camera + lens combo can really do because it's meant to be compact and light.
Now I'm Curious, Which One Do You Prefer?
Our Creative Calligraphy Course focuses more on modern calligraphy, but our Brush Lettering Kits also have a course with it, so that you can learn how to write with them. Both are very enjoyable and relaxing though - so it's just a matter of preference.
