Your Essential Guide to Calligraphy Pens ✍🏻

Which Calligraphy Pen is Best for You?
Hi friend,
We love calligraphy over here, so it's inevitable that I just have more than one calligraphy pen, haha.
Generally, you can divide the pens between the straight pens and the oblique pens. The straight pens are look similar to our normal pens, except that you can change the tips of the pen, which are called nibs. Both lefties and righties can use straight pens, however, I recommend the straight pen for lefties.
Oblique pens have an offset flange, which puts the nib on a slant. This helps right-handed writers write on a slant. For righties, the oblique pens have an offset flange on the left of the pen. While there are left-handed oblique pens, we don't currently offer these in the shop.

Inside our Beginner Starter Kit or Mini Calligraphy Starter Kit, we include our dual-purpose pen*. This wooden pen is lightweight and can be interchanged between an oblique pen and a straight pen, so you can try out both. This is a great pen to start with. When I was starting out with calligraphy, the pen I used was very similar in size and width as this one.

*We currently aren't able to sell them individually, but we will once we get our new stock in.

In our shop, we also have our handmade quartz pens made with resin and brass, which come in oblique and straight as well. These are thicker, but more comfortable to hold and write with. As you get more comfortable with calligraphy, I would recommend these as your next step.

These universal nib pens are my favorite, and I use them on the daily. They're beautiful, and they're able to hold many kinds of nibs without much adjustment. Sadly, we've had a lot of issues with our penmaker for these so we only have whatever's left in our inventory at the moment. We were supposed to restock last year, but we still have yet to receive our new stock. But in terms of comfort and flexibility, these are the best.

P.S. I'd Also Love to Invite You to Something a Little Special
We're hosting a Written Word Insider Zoom Call - a small, cozy gathering where I'll share what's coming up and hear directly from you about what you'd love to see more of from Written Word. I know some of you were already able to put in your time and effort in our survey, which we are very grateful for! If you don't feel comfortable to attend an in-person call, you're welcome to also do the survey instead.
- Zoom Call Option 1: October 7, 3PM Vancouver Time (PDT)
- Zoom Call Option 2: October 9, 10AM Vancouver Time (PDT)
If you aren't able to make it and/or would prefer that we do a one-on-one instead, that's totally fine as well. You can email me back here at karla@writtenwordcalligraphy.
I can't wait to dream, share and listen together. Thank you for being such a special part of our journey. Don't forget to RSVP so I can prepare!
xoxo, Karla
