3 Ways to Learn Calligraphy as a Beginner: Our Course Map

We know it can be so confusing when we have multiple courses and tons of calligraphy worksheets and practice pads to choose from, but here’s a course map to help you navigate through our offerings.

Are you looking to learn calligraphy?

Beginner Level: New to Calligraphy

If the answer is yes, then we have different options, because we do know that everyone learns a little bit differently.

  • Creative Calligraphy Course - our most comprehensive, online modern calligraphy course for beginners. It is a two-way program, so you have 10 pre-recorded video sessions that teach you everything you need to know to learn calligraphy at home, and then you can submit your homework and get the feedback you need to troubleshoot and write calligraphy confidently. It only opens 3-4 times a year - January, April, July and October.

  • Calligraphy Starter Kit - our signature calligraphy supplies kit for beginners, intended to be taken with the Creative Calligraphy Course. It’s one place to get all the tools you need to take the course, but it’s also a great way if you want to learn calligraphy on your own.

  • Creative Calligraphy Made Easy - our very own calligraphy for beginners book with writable worksheets, calligraphy projects for gifting, hand-lettered cards, DIY wedding calligraphy details, and so much more. Some of my students like to learn while reading, so this is a great way to go about it.

To supplement your calligraphy learning, you may want the following calligraphy supplies:

  • Modern Calligraphy Practice Pads - these are practice worksheets that feature 6 different modern calligraphy styles, so that you can get your muscle memory up to speed. These tracing calligraphy pads are great for practicing and exploring your style as well. Available in lowercase, and uppercase, each one has 65 sheets each - teaching not only the letters themselves, but connecting - through writing common letter combinations, words and phrases.

  • Printable Calligraphy Worksheets - these worksheets are different from the practice pads as they have only one calligraphy style per sheet. These are our own calligraphy styles, and they are modern styles, so they don’t have a specific slant or spacing like Copperplate or Spencerian. You will need to print them yourselves either at your own home printer, or at a local printer. We often recommend the Lissome Calligraphy Style for beginners - even our Creative Calligraphy Course students purchase these for additional practice as well.

  • Dual Purpose Calligraphy Pen - Our online courses teaches calligraphy for lefties and righties, and so our dual-purpose pen is great for both as well. You can switch it up as an oblique pen holder, or remove the flange and use it as a straight pen holder.

Intermediate Level: Have been doing calligraphy for 3-6 months

In June 2020 we launched an online course for creating your own calligraphy style, called Signature Styles. This program focus on the creative process of developing your own style, where to find inspiration, how to incorporate the inspiration into calligraphy, and so much more.

In 2021 we are also looking to offer more calligraphy supplies for the serious calligraphy enthusiast, including adjustable calligraphy pens, specialty inkwells and dot-grid notebooks to foster your love for calligraphy.

Advanced Level: Have been doing calligraphy for 1 year

Want to take your calligraphy skills to the next level? Have you ever wondered how to create wedding invitations or how to create your own calligraphy business?

How to Become an Invitation Designer with a specialty in Calligraphy / Lettering

In May 2021 we launched our first masterclass course, Invitation Design Bootcamp. In the Invitation Design Bootcamp, we will go through all the details to help you create your own wedding invitations from start to finish, or design wedding invitations for clients. This includes all the graphic design skills, learning how to design for print, and how to create a cohesive style from the color palette, choosing materials (and where to source them), and to implement them in real life.

How to Start Your Own Calligraphy Business

In August 2021, we will be launching our second masterclass course, Calligraphy Business Kickstarter. In this course, I’ll be sharing all my years of experience to teach you how to start your own calligraphy business. This course focuses a lot more on the actual setup of the business, from the brand name to the products/services you provide, marketing, logistics and operations, to pricing, client communication, content creation and so much more. It really provides a holistic perspective to starting a business in the calligraphy industry, from a calligrapher to a calligrapher.
