There’s still time to start something beautiful this year 💫

'I Don't Think I Can Do It'

That's what my church's worship leader told me this week, when she mentioned that she was interested in the calligraphy workshop I'm hosting for the women's group, where we'd be learning brush lettering and creating ornaments together, like the project I had in my Creative Calligraphy Made Easy book.

But of course, I encouraged her that it's never too late to start something new, and I'll be right there with her to start her calligraphy journey. I also sent her a video of Jasiel trying calligraphy out this week, after she saw me teaching it during my live session this past weekend

We All Start Somewhere

Wiggly lines? Uncertainty with how to use the tools? Ink not flowing properly? Holding the pen backwards? Yep, I get that. Jasiel's at the stage that she's just learning the alphabet and is still building finger strength to hold a pen. We do a lot of play-doh, lego building, scissor work, to get her fine motor skills. So even following lines and tracing can be challenging for her.

And of course as a toddler, she just wants to say "no" to me most of the time, even when she's holding the pen backwards. But, she was very careful and tried to apply ink onto the nib just like I do. Eventually, she let me adjust her grip and guide her to writing.

It's never too late to get started.

With the holidays just around the corner, perhaps this is a good time to take a pause and learn calligraphy. I promise, I'll be right there with you, every step of the way.

How Do You Get Started in Calligraphy?

Well, there are a few ways! First is deciding what kind of calligraphy you'd like to learn. I specialize in modern calligraphy, which uses a calligraphy pen, flexible pointed nib, and ink, to create beautiful letters. I also teach brush lettering, which uses a flexible-tip brush pen to write with. It is easier to pick up brush lettering usually, especially when you don't have much time.
If you've been meaning to start - perhaps this is the time for you to start somewhere.

With gratitude,

Karla
